Machine tool repair

Services

Six jobs on your machine tool

Each service has its own page: how the work is done, what I measure with and how you can tell it is time. I work on the installed machine, at your plant, worldwide.

Have your machine checked
  • Spotted machine bed, both ways showing contact over the full length.

    Machine way repair

I measure the way, rework it and measure it again. On beds, saddles and rotary tables.

  • Freshly scraped way, spotted in blue, with the even pattern of oil pockets left by the scraper strokes.

    Way scraping

By hand, stroke by stroke. Also on ways that have worn far out of tolerance.

  • Rebuilt machine bed in the workshop, painted white, with two ways showing blue contact.

    Machine tool rebuilding

Reworked and set up again until the machine holds its geometry.

  • Two electronic levels on a precision straightedge across the table of an Okamoto 157 DXNC surface grinder.

    Machine tool alignment

Back to level and back to geometry after relocation or a new installation.

  • Large spotted rotary table of a machine tool, with a tolerance written on the casting in red marker.

    Way liner replacement

A new liner on the mating way, then scraped in.

  • Digital indicator on a magnetic base, set against a straightedge above the rotary table of a machine tool.

    Machine tool inspection report

I record the readings and hand them over. You don’t have to judge the work by looking at the surface.

Symptoms

Which service fits which symptom?

Most enquiries start with what the machine shows, not with a service name. The table matches each symptom to the pages that describe the work for it.

SymptomHow you notice itMatching service
Stick-slipThe saddle sticks and then jumps instead of starting smoothly, most clearly at slow feeds and small infeeds.
Size won’t holdSize drifts along the table, in the same direction on every part.
Play in the gibThe gib is adjusted all the way in, and the saddle still has play. That goes for flat ways as well as dovetail ways.
Chatter marksRegular waves on the part, even though speed, feed and tool are right. They show first where the saddle spends most of its time.
Scoring and gallingThe way shows scoring in the direction of travel, or galling where the saddle spends most of its time.
Several axes affectedChatter marks on one axis, play on another. One way alone no longer explains it.
DowntimeThe machine is down because it can no longer produce like this, and replacing it costs more than the work on the ways.
After relocationThe machine stands on a new foundation or in a different building.
The foundation has settledThe floor has settled, and the machine has followed it. The levels show it over the travel.
Liner loose or chippedThe liner has come loose at the edge or has broken out in places.
Way rescrapedThe way in the bed has been scraped, and the old liner no longer fits it.
After scrapingAfter any work on the ways, as a record of what the way bears now.
After relocation or installationThe machine stands in a new place, and you want it on record whether it still runs in its geometry.
To find the causeIt is unclear whether the chatter marks come from the ways or from spindle and tool. The measurement shows it before any scraping.

What I don’t do

Laser measurement and retrofits are not part of it. If you want a control retrofitted, you need a different company.
